OT DAY 544 - Done A Good Job for God Doesn't Mean You Can Finish Well (Please click here for English podcast)

Silence

1.   Put on your “brakes” and stop for a moment of silence
2.   Wait for God. Breathe deep for God's peace and feel His presence. Exhale your worries.

Praise and Thanksgiving

1.   Think through your day, all the times that made you smile
2.   Thank God for all those moments, and for all those people
3.   Open your heart to praise the Lord

       Shout for joy in the Lord, O you righteous!
           Praise befits the upright.
        Give thanks to the Lord with the lyre;
           make melody to him with the harp of ten strings!
        Sing to him a new song;
            play skillfully on the strings, with loud shouts.

                                     Psalm 33:1-3

Confession and Repentance (Subjective Shifting Devotion Method http://bishopsilas.blogspot.ca/2009/08/count-down-5-subject-shifting-devotion.html)

1.  Pray for the Holy Spirit to work in you:

     “Dear Holy Spirit, shine your light into the places of darkness in my life. Show me my sins, everything that blocks me from encountering God. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.”

2.  Through the Holy Spirit, examine yourself for a short silence and then pray:

     "Dear Lord Jesus, thank you for dying on the cross for our sins and being victorious over death and sin. I confess my sin to you(pause, to tell Jesus what the Holy Spirit has shown you). Forgive my sins by your blood and help me follow you. Holy Spirit, fill me that I may be able to receive your gift to love God and His people. In Jesus Name I pray, Amen."

The Word (2 Kings 10:28-36)

28 Thus Jehu wiped out Baal from Israel. 29 But Jehu did not turn aside from the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, which he made Israel to sin—that is, the golden calves that were in Bethel and in Dan. 30 And the Lord said to Jehu, “Because you have done well in carrying out what is right in my eyes, and have done to the house of Ahab according to all that was in my heart, your sons of the fourth generation shall sit on the throne of Israel.” 31 But Jehu was not careful to walk in the law of the Lord, the God of Israel, with all his heart. He did not turn from the sins of Jeroboam, which he made Israel to sin.
32 In those days the Lord began to cut off parts of Israel. Hazael defeated them throughout the territory of Israel: 33 from the Jordan eastward, all the land of Gilead, the Gadites, and the Reubenites, and the Manassites, from Aroer, which is by the Valley of the Arnon, that is, Gilead and Bashan. 34 Now the rest of the acts of Jehu and all that he did, and all his might, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel? 35 So Jehu slept with his fathers, and they buried him in Samaria. And Jehoahaz his son reigned in his place. 36 The time that Jehu reigned over Israel in Samaria was twenty-eight years.
                                                 2 Kings 10:28-36

Let's have a time to be still and give the Holy Spirit space to speak through the passage we have just read. Offer this time up to Jesus as you listen to him, while listening to "Gabriel's Oboe"

    My Listening

           It seems that Jehu did an excellent job for God to take out worship to Baal completely. But, because he continued to let the Israelites to worship the golden calves at Bethel and Dan, God began to reduce the size of Israel.

     Let's see how Professor John Goldingay tells us:
     (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Goldingay) :
              The scary aspect to the story is that we cannot assume that the mere fact of God's using us (or other people) as the means of acting in the world says anything about the moral rightness of our actions (or of other people's actions). Jehu emphasizes that the actions he takes are the means of God's word being fulfilled, but that does not mean he is off the hook morally.

John Goldingay. 1 and 2 Kings for Everyone. Louisville,KY: Westminster John Knox Press, 2011, p.144.

      Do not think that you have done a lot for God and then you do not need to have a clean heart and to live a holy life. We may not be able to finish well if we do not be careful of our daily lifestyle.

    Dear Lord Jesus,
    Help us not to boast how much we have done for you but to be humbly walk with you each day.  In Jesus name we pray. Amen.

Reflect on these questions:
   1. Do you have similar sins like Jehu to worship some golden calves?

2. How can today's message helps you to focus on God each day and to be able to finish well?

    3. What have you got from Jesus today?
